Welcome to my roundup of all I’ve been getting up to and loving. I'm going to be a bit cheeky and use this post to round up two weeks in one…
Watching York Viking Festival
Jorvik Viking festival is an annual week long celebration of York’s viking heritage. This year’s theme focused on “The Untold Story of Women in the Viking Age” and included a celebration of extraordinary women of the period.
I filmed the video above on Saturday as I managed to catch the Viking procession as it headed down Stonegate.
Taking Part in a#Iamremarkable Workshop with Women in Tech York
I’ve dedicated a whole blog post to this workshop, which was an extremely enlightening and positive experience!
#IamRemarkable is a Google initiative empowering women and underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. To date over 1000 workshops have been held across the world, all focused on getting women to actively vocalise their achievements.
Attending PwC’s Tech She Can Charter’s First Birthday in London
Following on from the theme above, last Monday I had the pleasure of attending the first birthday celebrations for PwC’s Tech She Can Charter, as my work is one of the 90 signatories.
At the beginning of 2019 the Charter launched an inclusive technology education pilot named ‘Tech We Can’, with five secondary schools in the Midlands. Tailored female-friendly lesson plans were taught to girls and boys aged 10-13.
During the evening we heard how early evidence shows that the lessons were successful in changing perceptions among both boys and girls about the breadth of technology careers.
Indulging in Platters and Cocktails at Pairings Wine Bar in York
Pairings has to be my absolute favourite place to grab a glass of wine in York city centre, so much so that Des and I actually held our engagement party here in 2017!
Alongside wine, the bar excels in cocktails and sharing platters.
Over the years we have shared many a deli board whilst watching the hordes flow through Coppergate. This most recent visit was made even more interesting with the addition of many Vikings walking down the street outside, a surprisingly common sight in York, even outside of the Viking festival!
Hearing about the Future of Tech at a Tech York Meetup
Continuing the theme of tech events, last Thursday I attended Tech York, a local tech meetup run by Science City York.
We heard about the latest innovative technology developments, building serverless applications, ensuring your company is focused on customer needs and also heard from other York tech community speakers.
I love these types of events as they provide a fantastic opportunity to hear from local companies and network with an interesting range of people.
