The way I see it, there are two kinds of big break:
1. A breakthrough moment which "makes you" (often very rare, mainly the preserve of big Hollywood films, more likely comprised of many small moments combined together!)
1. A break from your daily life and normal routine (often requires leaving home and going on some kind of adventure, mainly fulfilling, more likely to shake your life up than transform it completely.)
Its the latter that I'm really interested in here, which is odd timing, I know! In January people are usually facing going back to work, with the holidays gently fading in the background.
In my opinion, January is exactly when we need a big break the most.
The thing is, Christmas is pretty exhausting. The expectation to have a good time is at its most ferverant, especially on the big day and the, ever hyped to oblivion, night that is NYE. If you're anything like me, there's also a hell of a lot of travelling involved and a lot of time spent away from home in a different bed.
Add in some classic family drama, the pressure of cooking the most important meal of the year and some serious over consumption.
Christmas can also a time of increasing pressure at work, especially if you're in a retail or catering environment, with some businesses taking half their yearly revenue in two months during this period! (Let's all take a moment to give a big round of applause to everyone who worked on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, NYE and New Year's Day.)
if you're familiar with the scenarios described above, you will agree that this all adds up to a pretty non-relaxing week or two.
This is why I'm in Rome for five days, to really rest, to spend some time on and with myself. To indulge in some headspace and contemplation amongst the hustle and bustle of this beautiful city.
My out of office is on.
My phone is turned off.
I am free from distractions and the ever present desire to do "just one more hour" of work. I am surrounding by new sensations, new places and new ideas.
Let me tell you, it's pretty damn wonderful, I would recommend it a thousand times over. I am finally getting the rest I need!
You don't even have to schlep all the way to Rome. Take a day off, take a week off, take an evening off!
I implore you to take some amount, any amount, off and bring yourself away from your normal life.
Do something you have never done before. You can start small - watch a film you would never normally watch or go to that resturant you have always fancied, but could never quite justify a reason for visiting.
if you can go large, this is one occasion where it's good for you! Book a day out, a weekend trip, go somewhere you have never been before!
A change is as good as a rest, but a change and a rest is even better.
Ciao, I'll see you back in the UK at the end of the week!
